Sex Education and the Pope.

February 19, 2010

The Pope visits Britain. He shouts that his imaginary friend doesn’t like gay people, and his imaginary friends want people who love someone of the same gender, to be discriminated against. Hey presto- the Equality Bill gets watered down.

Now Ed Balls is announcing that the Government’s Children, Schools and Families Bill will be watered down too, and the Catholic Church are claiming credit.

Can someone explain to me, why we as a democratic country, are allowing this organisation- a minority religious interest, to dictate the sex education my daughter receives, or perpetuate discrimination against British citizens?

An organisation, who are directly responsible for placing their own beliefs about sexual morality, over the lives of millions of Africans. An organisation which freely exploits the power it obtains, as an aid, education, and healthcare provider, to lobby for the restriction of basic womens reproductive health services, and ignores human cost of womens lives. An organisation which wilfully covers up child abuse, on a worlwide scale, and an organisation which has been culpable in genocide.  At least one of those things should be enough to get an organisation disqualified from being able to dictate morality to the rest of us? Surely?

It is generally(in my humble opinion) a bad idea to take into account opinions on a sex EDUCATION policy, if they have never had sex,  think contraception is bad, and anyone who has sex is going to burn in the eternal fires of hell.

Especially when we have one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates in europe. Would it be too much to ask, that policies which have real consequences for young people, are based on evidence, and not a bloke with a funny hat, and an imaginary homophobic friend.
