Message to Journalists.

May 30, 2010

The man who murdered Shelly Armitage, Susan Blamires, and Susan Rushworth has adopted a media friendly nickname. Presumably in some hope of whipping up another media gorefest with a horror movie name, where he can find himself a celebrity.

Message to journalists- while  I appreciate that such a gore fest would sell many papers, and allow you to whip up outrage- could use some sense? Allow this to be treated as what it is, not continue what this man is so clearly trying to start? Remember there are real women, and real problems which underpin this terrible tragedy.

Aftermath of the David Laws hiccup.

May 30, 2010

‘Chief Secretary to the Treasury resigns following fraudulent claim’ is a fairly damaging epitaph to a short political career.

Whizzkid Treasury official drummed out by rampant homophobia, at a heavy price to the country, slightly better.

David Laws isn’t going anywhere fast. His position as Chief Secretary to the Treasury was untenable, because of the relation of his offence, to his position.

He will pop back up with a different job soon enough, the waters around the end of his last post muddy enough that his reputation remains intact.

Lets face it, the revolving door between banks and the treasury, means that he doesn’t even need to be an MP to have influence there.

Methinks he has come out of a sticky situation rather well, although the questions this raises about our inability to think straight when the idea of a man having sex with another man crops up, are quite disheartening.

Politics is a grubby business.

BP Oil Spill

May 29, 2010

I have a question. I don’t know much about geology, or the planet I live on. But how much oil is down there? Is it a finite reservoir, or linked to other sources? If we can’t stop this leak- how much is down there? What is worst case scenario from this?

I should know this. Will read – any suggestions for reading welcome.

More thoughts Re:David Laws

May 29, 2010

David Laws expenses story does deserve singling out.

This is an issue of definitions for accounting, definitions for accounting are fairly black and white, and to misrepresent your circumstances for accounting purposes is something which has a cost to the taxpayer. Offsetting fraudulent claims against unclaimed amounts isn’t really allowed on your tax return, or will the Treasury be making that change?

How the Chief Secretary to the Treasury conducts his relationship is irrelevant. In terms of accounting-he was, by definition cohabiting with someone-and if he doesn’t know the difference in relation to his personal finances, he shouldn’t be in charge of the nation’s.

*added later- As a country, we don’t appear to be able to think straight when homosexuality comes into the equation. We really need to get past it. That’s a reflection of us, and not a reflection on David

David Laws

May 29, 2010

I logged on to twitter last night, and read a long list of tweets about David Laws being outed, and singled out for his expenses claim, as an opportunity to do this.

I have to say, my stomach sank. I don’t like the fact that we live in a time when ‘outing’ is something that still has political capital. I don’t particularly like that one day I will have to explain to my daughter the feelings and thoughts that make that possible.

But I looked at it. I have just finished writing an article about abortion rights, and one of the points I made was that we now have a parliament where Theresa May and David Cameron have both had to pretend that their homophobic voting records were a matter of ignorance they had rectified. Where the first civil partnership in the House of Commons was a matter for the whole house to celebrate.

And I wondered why a Liberal Democrat would feel the need to hide in the closet in this climate- then I remembered that am a 32 year old straight woman, who hasn’t really ever had to hide a relationship at all- and figured that bit was none of my business.

But what is my business is that the Chief Secretary to the Treasury,  paid £58’000 to a press officer, to spin the hardship that people will experience under his austerity measures. That as well as spending that, he felt that he would misrepresent his personal relationship in claims worth £40000.

Secret or not. You live with someone, you sleep with them every night, you are involved in their mortgage decisions? You are cohabiting, you are married, or you are in a civil partnership- you are living as spouses for  accounting purposes.

Seperate social life and bank account as a definition of marriage, would mean I didn’t have to consider divorce proceedings.

This man will preside over  cuts and reforms which subject welfare claimants to ever more hardship, and ever more stringent benefit conditions- in the name of austerity.

When I was investigated for 4 months, for losing receipts totalling £100, and made  keenly aware that any question of wrongdoing would lead to me losing my job(no question of wrongdoing found btw)-could I use that defence? I was told that this was about accountability for taxpayers money. Could a benefit claimant use the same defence?

If this man is Chief Secretary to the Treasury no less, and is willing to make a fraudulent personal expense claim- regardless of the reason- then that is a problem. And for that reason, Laws should go.

The fact that being a gay man is enough of an issue to cause this much discussion, also a problem. The two problems are very seperate.

Rory Stewart MP

May 27, 2010

I have been reading about Rory Stewart MP this evening. As a rabid badge wearing tory disser, I was hoping I could blog to mock.

You should read this mans career, some of the articles he has written. Impressive stuff. I wouldn’t even presume to give you links, there are so many. Intellectually and morally consistent, I don’t care which side of the fence you reside on, this is the kind of man you want in the House of Commons. Watch his career with interest.

500 faces of Hebden Bridge

May 27, 2010

A man called Jason Elliot took my photograph yesterday for the 500 faces of Hebden Bridge project.

Hebden Bridge is 500 years old this year. I have lived in towns where celebrations of important milestones have totally passed me by. Obviously I noticed, but they are usually affairs organised by people I have never met, attended by ‘members of the community’ I have never heard of.

THis one is a bit different. Jason Elliot is taking the pictures of 500 members of the local community. Not just people who are on the council- but the people you see every day walking around town. Looking through the pictures he has taken, I can see people I know, the people who actually do form our local community. The people who work in shops, behind bars, friends of mine- their kids. We are a small town, and 500 people covers a lot of ground.

A project the community actually has ownership of.

Anyway I think that is worth blogging about.

These are the pictures he took of me.
